Concordia University Portland hosted the Instructional Design Summit on June 3, 2019.

Jessica Outlaw and Trevor F. Smith hosted an interdisciplinary gathering of educators, technologists, and designers at the Outlaw Center for Immersive Behavioral Science at Concordia University to discuss how instructional design can be transformed by the unique capabilities of immersive web technology, with an emphasis on VR & AR.

In this blog post, we will share output from the day’s workshop activity. The goal was to stimulate new ideas, build connections across disciplines, and give participants the experience of imagining multiple futures in a systemic way.

Undergraduates - facilitated by Dr. Juliette Levy

Future 1:

Future 1 is about the uncertainty of work in the future. Students can spend years learning a skill but be unable to handle a future in which that skill changes or disappears.  In this future we restructure incentives and education around multi-disciplinary and dynamic work. Students use and create immersive web experiences to learn how to learn and they often do it on the job as apprentices. “Do-ers” are given more tools to effectively teach their apprentices.

Future 2:

In future 2 education is decoupled from capital production. Instead of workers, universally accessible education creates the thinkers and citizens that the world needs to be its hands, eyes, and ears.  

Future 3:

This third future provides on-demand education as a service. Instead of partitioning off students from the rest of the world, they are sent out into it with XR glasses and expert support that together serve as their personal learning agents. As new problems arise, people are empowered to learn about existing solutions and helped through the process of employing and improving the world.

Nurses

Future 1:

In this future we fully embrace the mixture of digital and physical in training exercises for nurses. Our classrooms and labs contain mannequins and tools that are recognized and augmented by our immersive web glasses. We see and hear instructions and guidance that are reactive to our learning styles and pace.

Future 2:

In future 2 we receive guidance and support while communicating and processing emotions. Whether we’re helping patients through death and grief or we’re seeing and relieving professional burnout, our immersive web glasses help us see ourselves and others. 

Future 3:

In our final future we engage with immersive simulations of medical scenarios and then are guided through retrospectives. We see ourselves as others would see us and our immersive web glasses ask us to consider aspects of our work that we may have missed in the moment. They may ask us, “How do you feel your performance was in this moment?” or “Here, should you have washed your hands?” 

Prisoners - facilitated by Kim Read

Future 1:

In this future, the immersive web provides people in prison with the tools they need to practice and then apply life and professional skills. Workplace simulations and situational training is available while in prison and then with them after they are released. 

Future 2:

The second future is one where we have created a secure and safe platform that connects inmates with people outside of the prison facility for support and to build community. The immersive web is used to maintain and grow their connection to the people who will be there for them when they leave the prison facility.

Future 3:

Our final future has prison facilities around the US working together to share content and resources for the people in their care. There is an intranet of sorts that combines the efforts of the people working in the prison facilities who are responsible for learning and training resources.

Global South - facilitated by Monika Bielskyte

Future 1:

As the Global North and South are increasingly connected we can build a future where conferences and meetups are truly international and open to people with different levels of wealth. We will use XR to build the technologies and social norms so that it is normal and enjoyable for speakers to appear on stage from their remote locations. We will use XR glasses to enable more fluid cross-language and decentralized collaboration.

Future 2:

In this future we build the infrastructure for truly cross-cultural media campaigns, ones that support local artists who make long-lasting environmental installations. These artists will have the resources to communicate a short term commercial message as well as improve the long-term beauty and health of the area.  

Future 3:

We change the way that media is created and rewarded to encourage protopian world building and discourage utopian or dystopian messages. We encourage people to think through how existing problems with our climate, or ecology, our power dynamics, our interrelated economies and how to put energy into progressive solutions.
